5 Getaways Over Presidential Inauguration 2017 Weekend

If you believe the early numbers, anywhere from 400,000–700,000 people are expected to arrive in Washington, D.C. next weekend for the January 20 inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump and the Women's March on Washington the following day. If those kind of crowds make you say hellllll no and you would prefer to get out of dodge, we've rounded up five deals (thanks, Google Flights) from D.C. for a long weekend getaway. Emphasis on "get. away."

    Nassau, The Bahamas

    The deal: JetBlue has flights to the Bahamas from the mid $200s–$300 if you fly with a brief stopover in Fort Lauderdale, for an extra-long weekend (Wednesday, Jan. 18–Monday, Jan. 23). You'll miss all the noise in D.C. if you do. The price ticks up a little to $333 if you fly out Friday, back Monday.

    Where to stay: If you can't wait until the One&Only Ocean Club re-opens February 14, a great alternative is The Cove Atlantis on Paradise Island. (The Atlantis overall has availability next weekend.)

    Havana, Cuba

    The deal: Everyone seems to have flights to Cuba right now, with lots of options for a Thursday–Monday jaunt to Havana. Fly early in the morning on American from BWI to maximize your time there; round-trip is from $303.

    Where to stay: Remember, Americans can't just be tourists in Cuba. We have all your questions answered here; consider Hotel Santa Isabel in Old Havana, and travel under the "educational" or "public performances" categories by keeping a full itinerary of cultural outings.

    Martinique

    The deal: There are $418 round-trip flights to Martinique in the Caribbean right now; fly Norwegian, Friday-Monday, between BWI and Fort-de-France.

    Where to stay: The French take long holidays in Martinique, and often rent out their second homes the rest of the year. Check Airbnb for the weekend, and if you want to extend your trip, take the four-hour ferry to Guadeloupe for the full French Caribbean experience (and to use up your extra euros).

    Mexico City, Mexico

    The deal: Why not cross the border, for emphasis? A one-stop, round-trip flight to Mexico City is only $254 on Delta right now (book asap, and fly Thursday–Sunday out of BWI).

    Where to stay: Try Hotel Carlota or Downtown Mexico first; use this guide for the rest, although we highly recommend focusing on some of the city's incredible art museums.
