The World's Most Insanely Beautiful Coastlines

When we started this list, we had 50-odd coastlines to choose from across both hemispheres: palm-lined stretches of white-sand beaches, profoundly scenic (and sometimes terrifying) coastal drives. In the end, we chose the coasts that are beautiful for their wildness, ruggedness, and jaw-droppability. They look like something made by giants, running their finger through rock like it's butter.     Nā Pali Coast, Kaua'i, Hawaii

    Nā Pali translates to “high cliffs” in Hawaiian, and the sharp ridges and deep valleys along this northwest edge of Kauai live up to the billing. Think towering waterfalls, isolated crescent beaches, sea caves. The intrepid traveler gets the best view: The coast is only accessible by catamaran, helicopter tour, or a hike that will make your legs burn. —Cynthia Drescher

  • Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland

    That thing we said about giants? It actually applies here: Legend has it the Giant's Causeway (pictured), with its thousands of hexagonal basalt columns rising from the sea, was the remains of an actual causeway built by giants.   • West Coast, South Island, New Zealand

    Whether you're hiking the Franz Josef Glacier or through the Milford Sound fiord, exploring Pancake Rocks or helicoptering over the Southern Alps, you can't help but ask yourself, amid all this natural beauty: Where's Gandalf? —L.D.R.

  • Patagonia, Argentina

    The journey south down the famous RN-3 highway begins with penguin colonies and picturesque Welsh settlements around the Península Valdés before hitting the edge of the Earth at the mountain-ringed frontier city of Ushuaia. RN-3 comes to an end within Tierra del Fuego National Park, where continuing on means gritting your teeth for the arduous boat journey across the Drake Passage to Antarctica.
