Photos: A Beach Weekend in Nice, France
Nice, away from the hustle of Paris and just a short flight or picturesque train ride away, is where we like to go to slow down. That sea breeze, the slow strolls along Promenade des Anglais, the elegance: It's the French Riviera at its best. Walking around "Vieux Nice," the old city, is one of our favorite ways to experience it all: Clock the colorful range of yellow, red, and ocher facades; the abundance of flower and antiques shops.
In the summer, cool off in the maze of narrow streets, popping into terraces, cafés, and souvenir shops. Take a walk around the market of the Cours Saleya, where you can shop for local goods like olive oil or lavender soaps. For lunch, try le pan bagnat, a tuna sandwich; socca, a chickpea crêpe; or pissaladière, a baked flatbread.
One of the area's best-known attractions, Museé Matisse, is on the hill of Cimiez and features the largest collection of Henri Matisse’s work showcasing his love affair with the city. Take a walk around the grounds, by the red villa in the olive grove, and by the ruins of the Roman amphitheater. The soft light streaming between the branches of the olive trees perfectly capture the tranquil, sun-soaked atmosphere of Nice.
